China will grow its grain reserves to ensure food security

In China, the State Council (the government) addressed local authorities with a demand to increase grain reserves. At the same time local authorities will be given additional powers in working out the problem of food security.

The State Council’s order says that grain in the country “will remain uptight for a long period of time” due to scarce land and water resources.

Big cities should maintain enough of grain stock and vegetable oil to ensure consumption for half a month in advance.

Local authorities should be responsible for the creation of grain reserves, their storage and security. In addition, local governments should take preventive measures against excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture, as well as prevent contamination of farming land with heavy metals.
