According to HGCA analysts, in 2012/13 MY United Kingdom has significantly increased volume of corn supplied onto country’s domestic market. This trend emerged due to growing consumption of grain feed mill industry. In addition, the price of imported corn is significantly lower than feed wheat of local production, which has increased significantly due to the decrease of its gross harvest in the current season.

In April of this year, compared to the same period of the previous season, import volumes of corn to the UK rose by 27%, to 103.3 thousand tons. In the reporting month, great portion of the given volume belongs to French corn, as well as Ukrainian grain.
Since the beginning of the current season volumes of corn shipments to the domestic UK market was 1.38 million tons, compared to only 0.82 million tons in the same period a year earlier. Country’s major grain suppliers during the reporting period were France, 452.4 thousand tons, and Ukraine, 388.7 thousand tons.
Another 27.5 thousand tons of grain was purchased in Russia.
It is worth mentioning, that in the current season Ukraine has significantly increased its presence on the corn market in the UK. In July-April 2011/12 MY, for instance, supply volume of Ukrainian grain was 4.6 thousand tons only. The main factor contributing to increasing corn import volumes from the Ukraine is its price attractiveness.
