In 2012, wheat yield in SAR fell by 7% compared to the previous year. Farmers of the Free-State province, one of the biggest regions-producers in the country, decreased their seeding areas by 42%.
During 2012 season the country harvested 1.87 million tons of wheat. That is, 2.01 million tons less than during 2011 season. Per "Kazakh- Zerno", this is the lowest yield collected since 2010, when country's overall wheat yield was 1.47 million tons.

The SAR is a net-importer of wheat and holds a leading position in wheat production among African countries to the South of Sahara. As of April 25, the price for domestic wheat grew by 37%. According to specialists, the price hike is necessary to stimulate farmers to grow their wheat production. Last year farmers seeded wheat on the smallest area since 1931. According to forecasts, wheat cultivation area should increase by 516 600ha. This is 1.1% more than a year earlier.

Compared to the previous year, country's overall canola yield grew by 34%, to 79 000 tons. In the meantime, production of barley for beer brewing purposes declined by 4.5%, to 29 800 tons.
