Mini-glossary: agricultural terms in plain English — Part 4
In the ag world, you’ll often run into complicated words that actually describe very simple things. Let’s keep unpacking the terms farmers use most often.
-
Absorption — the process of “soaking up.” For example, soil absorbs moisture after rain, and plant roots absorb nutrients.
-
Humates — natural substances extracted from soil or peat. Think of them as “vitamins” for plants: they help crops grow healthier and yield more.
-
Phytophages — insects or animals that feed on plants (in plain English: plant-eaters/herbivores). Yes, the very bugs that can damage your crops.
-
Consumers — organisms that feed on other living things. For instance, a cow eats grass, and people consume milk or meat.
-
Decomposers — nature’s “clean-up crew”: fungi and bacteria that break down plant and animal remains, returning nutrients to the soil.
All these processes and players interact to keep nature—and our agricultural production—in balance.
