According to the forecasts of Indonesian Association of Feed Producers (GPMT), this year country’s corn import will be 2.8 million tons. This is 86.67% more than last year’s import (1.5 million tons).

The growth of purchase from abroad is due to an increasing demand for animal feed. This year, demand for corn is estimated to be at 7.5 million tons. Therefore, import is very much needed to satisfy such a high domestic demand.
As previously reported by “Kazach-Zerno” IA, Indonesia outdid Malaysia in an attempt to became the largest corn importer in 2011. Their purchases totaled 3.1 million tons. Such high import volume was caused by the extreme drought in 2011, which destroyed harvests in major growing areas.

Indonesia buys about 60% of total volume of corn import from Argentina and the U.S.; India is an alternative supplier.
Demand of feed producing companies is about 70% of an annual corn consumption volume in Indonesia.
