In the current marketing year Great Britain is destined to become a net importer of wheat, although previously it was considered to be Europe’s largest grain producer and exporter. For the first time in ten years, the UK will become a net importer of wheat.
Extremely rainy weather throughout the year resulted in a decline in
corn yield. Last year, British farmers lost about 2 million tons of wheat because of unfavorable weather. Grain yield declined from 7.8 tons per hectare during previous year (average indicator of five year period) down to 6.7 tons per hectare.
This year, farmers could plant only 75% of the area planned for wheat. Reason for the decline of crops have sustained heavy precipitation. Wheat production will reach 11 million tons, in the meantime, domestic market demand is expected to be at 14.5 million tons.
